FORCE 10 GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH! First building system to achieve Codemark approval in Australia

Following 18 months of rigorous testing, Force 10 is the first and only building system in Australia to be awarded the CodeMark Certificate.

CodeMark is a new building product certification scheme managed by the Australian and New Zealand Federal Governments via the Australian Building Codes Board and New Zealand’s Department of Building and Housing and gives users the confidence that Codemark certified building products comply with all relevant Building Codes.

Force 10 are proud of this certification and the award comes close to Force 10 celebrating two additional milestones:

• 12 months Medical Treatment Injury free, 19 months Lost Time Injury free

• Tripled capacity as a result of investment in a new production facility at Crestmead

Thanks to the tenacity and determination of our staff, Force 10 has not only proven to be resistant to Cyclones, Earthquakes, Fire and Termites but also safe, reliable, extremely robust and compliant with the National Construction Code and the Building Code of Australia.

LOCAL manufacturer Robin Murphy is standing by Australian steel amid a host of cheaper imports which threaten to crowd out the local metal.

Mr Murphy, whose Force 10 products can withstand 300km/h winds, earthquakes, fire and flood, believes the point-of-no-return for Australian steel has not yet come.

His Darra factory, in Brisbane’s west, uses 150 tonnes of Australian galvanised steel a month sourced from OneSteel, BlueScope, Steelforce, Citi-Steel and Vulcan Steel.

“We are proud to be Australian, manufacturing here and using Australian products,” he said.

“We continue to invest in local growth thanks to the support of reliable local suppliers. We believe that the governments (both state and federal) should not only themselves use local contractors and manufacturers but also encourage the major infrastructure and mining companies to do the same.”

His comments came as the Federal Government yesterday appointed former Queensland premier Peter Beattie to a post charged with encouraging greater local participation in resource industry’s supply chain.

The appointment came as debate raged over the need for Australian mining companies to source products locally.

Mr Murphy said governments “should put more emphasis into local content especially on taxpayer-funded projects”.

His family company has won contracts overseas as well as those linked to the resource boom, providing transportable steel housing structures to 12 remote and overseas locations as well as major cities.

“Value for money does not mean the cheapest price,” he said. “We seek to compete on the basis of meeting the need for the toughest standards in cyclones, hurricanes and tornadoes.”

Group CEO takes the St Vinnies CEO Sleepout challenge

Group CEO of Queensland companies, Force 10 and Canstruct, Rory Murphy slept rough on June 16 – but it was all for a good cause. It was Rory’s first experience of the St Vinnies CEO Sleepout in Brisbane.

“It is quite an experience to sleep out in the park – how people do it night after night is difficult to fathom. Prior to participating I did not know that some 100,000 people sleep out every night and that 12,000 of these are 12 years or less. It is unbelievable and depressing to know how many 12 year old kids live on the street.”

With the help of family, friends, staff, colleagues and organisations Rory managed to raise $20,225 for the cause. All money raised goes directly towards the ongoing provision of Vinnies’ homeless services across Australia. Rory was in the top five fundraisers for Queensland, out of a total field of over 80 participating CEOs…not a bad effort for a first time fundraiser!

Rory is one of 86 CEOs in Queensland to take the challenge to experience homelessness first hand for one night.

Efficiency through Innovation, Safety throughout a Disaster

A Force 10 Emergency Safety Centre (ESC) is designed and constructed for savage atmospheric conditions. Whether they are located in cyclonic, earthquake, bush fire or flooding regions, communities can have the confidence to know that the Force 10 building system can resist the most extreme weather conditions.

The Force 10 system uses prefabricated high-quality galvanised steel framed modular walls, floors and roofs to create extraordinarily solid buildings. They are pre-fabricated in our Brisbane factory and then shipped to often difficult and remote locations to be assembled on site.

The advantage of the Force 10 system is that, not only is it extremely robust but the assembly process is also exceedingly smooth and with the guidance of a Force 10 foreperson together with suitable on the job training, it does not require skilled labour therefore allowing the community to assist with construction. These materials have been tested and certified to resist cyclonic winds up to 306kph and are fire resistant to bushfire attack level ‘Flame Zone’. The overall system is also clean and green with very little to no site waste and low CO2 emissions.

The ESC has been designed after more than 30 years of international experience and complies with all Government building standards. There are 8 separate ESC models depending on the number of people required to be sheltered. An ESC can protect from 100 to 1000 plus people, they can also easily double for other community assets such as halls and libraries therefore maximizing the community benefit and investment.

The huge task of cleaning up after the flood.

Dan Murphy , CEO of Brisbane Construction Company Canstruct and Mark Tauti, Samoan Chief and Factory Manager for Force 10 are men on a mission. Dan and Mark have been working all week to help their brothers, sisters, parents and their employees. Together they have assembled a skilled volunteer trades team of 18 x Force 10 men (mostly Samoans), 10 x Canstruct men, 9 utes, 1 bobcat, 1 excavator, 2 forklifts, a container forklift and a telehandler (an extra big forklift) to help as many people as they can since the flood hit Brisbane and Ipswich. All of the men have kindly volunteered their time and have been working phenomenal hours – starting at 5.30am and often working through to 6pm – muddy, difficult work – but everyone has pulled together.

They plan to work for as long as it takes to help staff and will continue to do so until the clean-up phase is over – a huge task. Those assisted will not be asked to put their hand in their pocket. 2 Canstruct and 1 Force 10 staff members have lost everything in the Floods, and a further large group of our employees have been flood damaged.

Canstruct and Force 10 staff have been hard hit as they tend to live close to their workplace which is at 30 Acanthus St, Darra.

Purchasing Officer Norm Lay, is one example. Norm’s home that he shares with his wife and son at Rocklea is completely under water – it’s a hell of a job, with water up to the roof of their home. This is the second time Norm’s house has been inundated – it was so in 1974 also. Norm has worked for Canstruct for almost 25 years. Another example is the Canstruct receptionist, Rebecca Taylor whose home at Brassall in Ipswich was also completely inundated. Rebecca has had to leave her new home and return to her parent’s place, as her place has been declared unlivable.

Dan Murphy, CEO of Canstruct has this to say today “We just want to help our staff, family and friends as much as we can. If a construction company like ours can’t help their own staff, well it just wouldn’t be right. We’ve got the people, the skills and the equipment, so we are doing our bit, just like everyone else.”

Canstruct and Force 10 are owned by the Murphy family also of Brisbane, and together employ 100 people who live predominantly in some of the hardest hit areas of Brisbane namely Darra, Rocklea, Goodna, Redbank Plains, Sinnamon Park, Ipswich, and Indooroopilly . Many of these staff suffered significant damage this week in the Brisbane Floods.

Dan has been working hard all week to also help his father, sister and brother at their respective houses, and also several of their neighbours at Sinnamon Park and Indooroopilly. Half the Murphy extended family have also have all been staying with him at his house at Tarragindi, swelling the numbers to 4 dogs, 1 baby, 3 kids and 7 adults (one being 8 months pregnant!).

Mark Tauti, who is a Samoan Chief for his community in Ipswich, has been working around the clock. Both of the men are exhausted but spurred on by the paramount need of their community. Mark is heavily involved with his community in the Ipswich region and has been pleased to be able to help people with such practical manpower.

Group CEO of Canstruct and Force 10, Rory Murphy and his eight month pregnant wife Ellecia are still unable to move home, whilst Founding Director of Canstruct, Robin Murphy and his wife Margaret have been able to move back into their home which missed the floods by approx. half a metre – they are living without power. Their daughter Kelly Murphy, was less lucky and her home also at Sinnamon Park was flooded, so she needed quite a bit of help in the clean-up. In addition two of Canstruct’s working premises were under water and significant equipment such as a 35 tonne Crane have been inundated and other construction equipment has been damaged.

Force 10 ready, willing and able to help rebuild Queensland.

Locally owned Darra manufacturing company, Force 10 International is ready to help Queenslanders who have lost their homes in the Queensland floods. Owners Robin and Margaret Murphy and their three sons, Adrian, Rory and Dan have been running Force 10 for six years now and until recently their principal business was exporting their product overseas to places such as Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and the Carribbean. Force 10 houses and buildings are built to survive nature’s toughest tests, such as Force 10 winds, cyclones, earthquakes, fire, termites and water damage.

Robin Murphy, Founding Director of Force 10.

Robin Murphy, Founding Director of Force 10 explains it thus “We built our own new home on the Brisbane River at Sinnamon Park, using the Force 10 engineered building system. From the outside our house looks like an ordinary suburban home but in fact its structure is quite different to the standard house. We can rest soundly in the knowledge that our home can resist extreme weather and yes, even flooding. Once the floodwaters recede, Force 10 is hoping to do our bit to help rebuild Queensland homes and businesses – and quickly. That’s what our fellow Queenslanders need – fast action. Our kit homes can be delivered and assembled much faster than the standard home and will give Queenslanders peace of mind too.”

Force 10 uses prefabricated and high-quality zincalume steel framed modular walls, floors and roofs to create extraordinarily strong buildings. They are pre-fabricated at the Darra factory and then shipped to often difficult and remote locations to be assembled on site. The advantage of the Force 10 system is that not only is it extremely robust, it is also very quick and easy to build, and can be erected with semi-skilled labour (after basic training). A standard house can and has been built to lockup stage in just 4 weeks.

The Force 10 factory at Darra employs almost 100 staff and has recently been significantly upgraded to boost production capability. In the last year Force 10 has invested over $2 million in new machinery, technology, facilities and factory systems. As a consequence Force 10 have doubled their manufacturing capabilities and reduced lead times to be able to compete in the international market. Traditionally Force 10’s market has been an overseas one in cyclone, hurricane and earthquake zones – but it is also an ideal option for Queensland.

A friendly Force 10 hits Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea will see a new era in the building and construction industry with the launch of the Force 10 Engineered Building Systems yesterday in Port Moresby.

Gone are the long construction days and nights of erecting a building or an estate. This has been made easier with the inclusion of Force 10′s pre-fabricated building system that builds upon a client’s request and packed and transported to the site to be built. Constructing a building efficiently has never been made easier.

Force 10 is not exactly new in the country as it has completed a 1,400 man camp site in one of the LNP project sites in Papua New Guinea already in a period of 4 months.

The Force 10 building systems provides building solutions for residential and commercial buildings for any project anywhere, worldwide. It is a breakthrough in innovative construction and design and minimises the number of building components required in a conventional build.

Force 10 is an immensely strong, integrated floor, wall and roof truss modular building system engineered for extremely rapid build. Thus these buildings are designed to be easily transportable to site either flat packed in containers or fully constructed without any fear of compromising structural integrity.

Its incredibly high standard is achieved with efficiency in design and manufacture, economy in construction and environmentally sustainable on any site. Some of the advantages of the Force 10 Building System is appropriate for a tropical and geographically active nation like PNG because it reduces much of the variables in building.

It provides a fast and economical construction, termite: fire and water resistant; hurricane and cyclone resistant, significant savings on energy requirements and suitable for flat and sloping blocks. Force 10 uses only precision enginnered steel so there is no wastage when your building arrives on site. The wall panels are revolutionary and instrumental in the amount of time saved at the construction stage. The floors consist of steel joists that can be securely supported by adjustable steel stumps gaining strength and rigidity as the hallmarks of this system. The roof system is strong with lightweight steel sections that rest together, ensuring effective mechanical joining and minimises corrosion.

Another onus is that this company delivers an environamentally friendly product with advantages that include transporting all components to site at one time, reduction of the number of deliveries, only components required are dispatched to site and all steel components reduce the need to fell more trees.

Indigenous Entrepreneurs Redbuilt To Partner With Force 10

Newly-formed Indigenous company, RedBuilt Pty Ltd, headed by Rus George Nasir and Che Cockatoo-Collins have signed a co-operative agreement with Force 10 International Pty Ltd and it’s associated company Canstruct Ltd to build Indigenous homes and medium construction projects in South Australia.

“The training of Indigenous people is central to the co-operative objectives to transfer skills and create real employment within Indigenous communities ” stated Che Cockatoo- Collins at the signing of the agreement at Force 10′s Brisbane H.Q.

Pictured at the official signing of the co-operative agreement are L to R:
Yazeed Evans, Redbuilt, Director Robin Murphy, Managing Director, Force 10
Rus George Nasir, Managing Director, Redbuilt John Ward, General Manager, Force 10
Che Cockatoo, Collins, Director Redbuilt Peter Gransden, State Dealer SA and Alice Springs
Patrick Martin, Divisional Manager – Commercial, Force 10

The plan is for Force 10 to “Train The (RedBuilt) Trainers” in how to build the homes which are cyclone and fire resistant and easy and fast to build in remote communities. After assessing several building models, Redbuilt chose to form an alliance with Force 10 as it has demonstrated a good history in working with remote communities together with strong local indigenous employment outcomes.

“Redbuilt trainers will, in turn, partner with local Aboriginal people to build their own homes – homes that are eco-friendly, extremely strong and durable and also to build them quickly and efficiently” said Rus George Nasir, Redbuilt’s Director.

“The Force 10 modular system is easy to construct with it’s steel frame and energy-efficient insulated walls that allow natural temperature control making the homes more climate smart than standard concrete houses and also absolutely ideal for this application” said Patrick Martin, Divisional Manager, Force 10 International “We are delighted to partner with Redbuilt for this very worthwhile initiative which has the potential of being extended to other areas”

The homes are founded on a unique patented footing system that does not require concrete or specialised equipment. It is perfect for remote locations where there is no ready mixed supply of concrete available. It also means that there is minimal disturbance to the local ecology and habitat and there is almost no site waste produced.
